Foreword

The Course

This course is designed as a quick overview of the Pascal language for the non programmer. It is not designed to be comprehensive. It is certainly not designed to teach 'programming', although it is the major resource in the first part of any of my intensive programming courses. The pure programming comes later, after learning Pascal. The text is designed to support lectures, delivered with practical experience and tutorial support.

Programming

In order to learn 'programming', students must have an effective and deliberate tool with which to practise and demonstrate their skills, and Pascal has always been ideal for this. The end of chapter exercises are the method by which 'programming' is introduced, the challenge to thought and design, once the syntax has been explained, practised and understood. How that is taught and learned depends upon your reasons for learning the language. The exercises are chosen to present as wide a range of classic 'problems' as possible for the first time programmer.
